Auroras, a meteor. February 15, 2025.

Many nights in a row with auroras. A meteoroid disintegrated at about UTC 18.59, hence a bright meteor was imaged. Location: Ørsta, Norway. Details: 7.5mm fisheye-lens, Canon 650D.

This meteor was also captured by an AllSky7 camera (AMS135) I operate jointly with the Norwegian Meteor Network.

More info about this observation can be seen here.

Polar stratospheric clouds. January 31, 2025.

According to NASA’s MERRA-2 climate model, the temparature in the stratosphere was sufficiently low (on January 31, 2025) to form Polar Stratospheric Clouds. In the western sky after Sunset there was something I reckon was PSC clouds. Location: Ørsta, Norway. Photo details: Canon 800D, Sigma 50-500mm lens.

Saturn, Venus, Lunar Corona. January 4, 2025.

The plan was to observe the Moon occulting Saturn, but shortly before the event clouds came rolling in. Earlier in the afternoon there was a nice corona around the Moon, as it was closing in on Saturn before the occultation. Venus was also nearby, a beautiful set of objects in the twilight. Location: Ørsta, Norway. Photo details: Canon 800D, Canon RP, Sigma 50-500mm lens, Celestron C8.

STEVE, Venus and Great auroras. January 1st, 2025.

STEVE in the western twilight sky. The sky was not properly dark. Hence, the images are over-exposed in the western sky. The first observation was at about UTC 15:58, and it endured till about 16:34. At about 16.40 UTC there was a vivid auroral display in the area where the STEVE (or SAR) was present. STEVE or SAR? It looks like a typical STEVE appearing alongside the greenish aurora. The greenish aurora is difficult to see on these images because of the bright sky. However, as the sky gradually became more dark the greenish can be seen near planet Venus.

This observation of STEVE was done by a Wyze-camera. My dslr camera malfunctioned because of the cold.

The sky was brilliantly lit by the auroras before darkness fell this evening (January 1st, 2025). A few images of the display below. Location: Ørsta, Norway. Photo details: 7Artisans 7mm fisheye-lens, Canon 650D.
