Fenomenet oppstår i F‑regionen, rundt 200–300 km over bakken, der elektriske felt skyv ionar sidelengs og varmar opp oksygen.
Lyset er roleg og diffust – ofte eit teikn på at energien i den øvre atmosfæren er i endring.

Auroral Dunes er eit sjeldant nordlysfenomen som liknar parallelle bølgjer eller sanddyner.
Dunes oppstår mykje lågare, rundt 100 km, der oksygen lyser grønt når det blir truffe av energirike partiklar.
Mønsteret blir forma av atmosfæriske gravity waves som lagar eit regelmessig bølgjemønster i auroraen.
– Overgangen mellom dei
Under spesielle forhold kan eit roleg RAGDA‑band i 200–300 km høgde endre form, bli meir bølgjete og flytte seg inn i nordlyssona.
Når energien aukar og gravity waves får tak, flyttar emisjonen seg ned mot 100 km, og strukturen utviklar seg til Auroral Dunes.
Dette er ein glidande overgang mellom to høgder, to energinivå og to delar av ionosfæren – eit fenomen som er sjeldan dokumentert.

RAGDA is a faint, wide glow that appears south of the normal auroral zone.
It forms in the F‑region, about 200–300 km up, where electric fields push ions sideways and heat oxygen.
The light is calm and diffuse – often a sign that the upper atmosphere is changing.

Auroral Dunes are a rare auroral pattern that looks like parallel waves or sand dunes.
They form much lower, around 100 km, where oxygen emits green light after being hit by energetic particles.
The wave pattern is shaped by atmospheric gravity waves imprinting structure into the aurora.
– The transition
Under certain conditions, a calm RAGDA band at 200–300 km can change shape, become more wavelike, and drift into the auroral zone.
As energy increases and gravity waves take over, the emission shifts toward 100 km, forming Auroral Dunes.
This represents a smooth transition between two heights, two energy regimes, and two atmospheric layers – a phenomenon rarely documented.
